A: I worked for my family-owned concrete business for 10 years. I’d say that “decision” to work in the field was more or less by default, but I did choose next to work in the manufacturing industry at Newport News Shipbuilding because of the opportunity. My construction career has landed me here at Spain Commercial due in large part to some fortunate networking, but also due to the decision to challenge myself to step back in to a more hands-on construction management role.

A: The “people-first” culture at Spain Commercial attracted me to the company, after my initial interview. Spain Commercial seems to be intent on building a culture that supports its team members, and challenges them to continue to aspire to personal and professional growth in a competitive industry.

A: My favorite part of the job is the versatility. I get the opportunity to work on multiple projects at once, at different phases. The day-to-day routine is different each week; it challenges me to adapt and plan my days/weeks accordingly. The versatility lets me be autonomous, but I can lean on available team members to learn how to solidify a successful, consistent plan to manage my time.

A: Listen. Listen to vetted team members in regards to their lessons learned. Listen to your superiors regarding what they want from you in your roles and responsibilities. Listen to your teams’ challenges. Pay attention to the customers’ requirements and to the small details of the project. Always be slow to speak, and quick to listen.

A: My family inspires me to push for that mark, just give as much as you can each day.

A: I’m excited to work on Riverside Cancer Infusion Center in Va Beach. It’s the largest project, in terms of scope, I will have managed. I’ve had quite a few lessons learned in the short period I’ve been here so far. I’d like some opportunities to see something with RCIC that I’ve seen before, and successfully mitigate any issues before they begin.
